When T-Shirts do the Talking

In an effort to help others understand the language in a country where communication could otherwise be lost, a company called Iconspeak has developed a T-shirt that gives travelers a chance to express what’s on their mind, without even opening their mouth.

Be it food, sleep, going to the bathroom, their shirt has a small icon available to address various scenarios and concerns.

The idea came after business consultant George Horn and a travel companion were trapped in a tiny village with no means to communicate verbally. Because of this, they had the idea of writing small symbols on a piece of paper in order to communicate with locals. This worked so well that they decided to put it on a shirt.

Iconspeak founders explain that “Many times we were confronted with a language barrier that was only to be overcome by drawing signs, symbols or icons on a piece of paper, map, or into the dirt. We thought it would be great to have an essential set of icons with you so that you could just point to whatever you need – and people would understand.”

So if you’re an international traveler, but not fluent in the language of the locale you’re visiting, check out Iconspeak’s t-shirt. It could save you from some potentially embarrassing or dangerous situations.
