Urban Dictionary. A place of wonder, of meaning for the unknown. This tool is a way for anyone to translate any sort of pop culture reference, or make one themselves.
This online dictionary gives many a chance to be a translator, when being a translator before was never thought possible.
Those who have a profession in translation need not to worry about Urban Dictionary taking them out of a job. In fact, it just adds spice to a language.
The online dictionary was created in 1999 by a freshman of computer science at California Polytechnic State University by the name of Aaron Peckham.
Aaron Peckham started the service to give users the ability to mold, shape and give meaning to their language. The online translation tool has words never even heard of until a user wrote it in the dictionary to see if it would go viral.
“Every single word on here is written by someone with a point of view,” Peckham said in an interview with the New York Times. “With a personal experience of the word in the entry.”
The Dictionary contains roughly 7.5 million definitions. With a regular word of the day, picked out by Peckham himself, according to the New York Times.
But here I am talking your ear off about it! The best way to really understand and appreciate something is to venture and use it yourself. See you on the flipside! UrbanDictionary.com
